We also understand the financial commitment required to obtain that education can sometimes be a difficult one. That's why the Air Force Reserve offers the educational benefits it does. We encourage you to review this information with your parents, along with the information found in our Parents section.

Reservists interested in a college or trade school education may qualify for financial assistance through the Air Force Reserve Tuition Assistance Program or the Montgomery GI Bill. And because there are Air Force Reserve wings all over the country, chances are good that you'll be able to attend school and still easily fulfill your part-time Reserve commitment.

What is Air Force Reserve Tuition Assistance?

tuition assistance Tuition Assistance is a way to pay for your education at a college or university of your choice, and you may take classes at the undergraduate or graduate levels. To qualify for Tuition Assistance, the school must be nationally or regionally accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Tuition Assistance is only authorized for classes leading towards an Associate, Bachelor's, or Master's degree. Reservists must apply for Tuition Assistance before the start of each class. The Reservist pays attending institution all costs associated with taking each class(s), and is then reimbursed (payment made directly to student) if the grade earned is a C- or better, to include "Satisfactory" and "Pass" on an alternate scale.

Who is eligible?

The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve is an educational program that provides tuition assistance to members of the Selected Reserve. This includes those who serve in the Air Force Reserve. It is the first program that doesn't require a person to serve on active duty in the regular Armed Forces to qualify, and it is provided at no cost to the Reservist.

Who is Eligible?

You may be an eligible Reservist if:
 
 • after 6/30/85, you signed a 6 year obligation to serve in the selected reserve,
  AND
 • you completed your Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT),
  AND
 • you got your High School Diploma or GED before you completed your IADT,
  AND
 • you are in good standing in a drilling Selected Reserve unit ,

who is eligible?If you stay in the Selected Reserve, benefits generally end 10 years from the date you become eligible for the program. You may have longer if you couldn't train because of a service-related disability. Your eligibility generally ends when you leave the Selected Reserves.

How Much Does Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve Pay?

The monthly benefit paid to you is based on the type of training you're in. If you're attending school, your payment is based on your training time.

How Can I Apply?

Your unit will give you a notice of Basic Eligibility (DD Form 2384 or 2384-1) when you become eligible. When you find an approved training program, fill out VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits and send it to the VA regional office that serves your area.
