Aircraft Metals Technology

Overview: To incorporate the optimal combination of strength, weight, and durability, modern aircraft utilize sophisticated metals and alloys.  Aircraft Metals Technologists design, weld, heat treat, fabricate, and machine precision metal tools, components, and assemblies for aerospace weapon systems and related support equipment.

Position:  Enlisted


Specific Tasks:

  • Draw working sketches, make templates, and select materials for metal working 
  • Perform machine tool cutting operations including using lathes and other machine tools 
  • Weld by oxyacetylene, arc welding, tungsten and metal inert gas, and other methods 
  • Conduct hardness tests to determine results of heat treatment 
  • Perform precision grinding and remove poisonous or corrosive deposits


  • Normal depth perception 
  • ASVAB score of 47 on Mechanical 
  • Demonstrated weight lift of 50 pounds


  • Candidates without prior military experience are required to attend 8 ½ weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX followed by Technical Training 
  • Technical Training is 96 days at Sheppard AFB, TX
  • College credits earned: Metals Technology - 28 credits
