Combat Control

Overview: These highly specialized FAA certified air traffic controllers are also members of Special Operations teams. Combat Control personnel are trained in scuba, parachuting, snowmobiling and other challenging disciplines.  Rather than applying their skills from inside secure airfield control towers, these Reservists direct air traffic from forward and often hostile areas.

Specific Tasks:

  • Conduct reconnaissance and surveillance of potential assault zones and target areas 
  • Plan, organize and establish Air Traffic Control in the target area 
  • Conduct fire support operations to include close air support and supporting arms 
  • Deploy into forward areas by parachute, scuba and other amphibious techniques, motorcycle, snowmobile or skis and function under extremely demanding weather conditions

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of Combat Control Team (CCT) Physical Ability and Stamina Test (PAST) 
  • Minimum score of 30 on CCT selection model completed in TAPAS
  • Physical qualification for air traffic controller duty, marine diving duty and parachute duty 
  • Physical qualifications as defined in AFI 13-219 Volume 1 and 2
  • Qualification to bear firearms 
  • Possession of Federal Aviation Administration Specialist Certificate (prior to assuming ATC duties) 
  • ASVAB score of 55 on General and 55 on Mechanical 
  • Demonstrated weight lift of 70 pounds
  • For 3-skill level, qualification as a static line parachutist, military freefall parachutist and combat diver
  • Eligibility for Secret security clearance

Training: 

  • Candidates without prior military experience are required to attend 8 ½ weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX followed by Technical Training 
  • Technical Training - Keesler AFB, MS, JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX, Fairchild AFB, WA, Ft. Benning, GA, and Pope AFB, NC  - length of training varies 
  • College credits earned: Airway Science - credits vary
