Dental Laboratory

Overview: The behind the scenes technical work of dentistry is performed by Dental Laboratory personnel.  Their work in the form of crowns, bridges, implants, dentures and other appliances are utilized and appreciated by patients for years.  These items must be strong enough to withstand normal chewing yet toxic free and able to be placed inside someone’s mouth. These personnel employ the latest technologies and materials to ensure comfort, durability and safety.

AFSC: 4Y0X2

Specific Tasks:

  • Fabricate and repair dental prostheses, bridges, crowns, inlays, pontics, splints, stabilizers and space maintainers
  • Use precious and nonprecious metals, acrylic resins and porcelain as basic materials
  • Perform minor maintenance on laboratory equipment

Requirements:

  • Normal color vision
  • ASVAB score of 66 on General 
  • Demonstrated weight lift of 40 pounds

Training:

  • Candidates without prior military experience are required to attend 8 ½ weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX followed by Technical Training
  • Technical Training is 130 days at JB San Antonio-Ft Sam Houston, TX
  • College credit earned: Dental  Laboratory Technology - 37 credits
