Overview: The look on someone's face when they first realize their eyesight is much clearer than before is one of the rewards of being an Ophthalmic specialist. In addition to assisting optometrists with patient examinations, these personnel work directly with patients in fitting glasses and contact lenses.

Position: Enlisted


Specific Tasks:

  • Assist optometrists in the examination and treatment of patients by performing visual tests and procedures
  • Order, dispense and fit patients with glasses and provide instruction on contact lens use
  • Assist aircrew members in aviator contact lens and night vision goggle program
  • Perform as surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery


  • Vision corrected to at least 20/30 in either eye
  • No detectable scotoma in eye with best acuity
  • ASVAB score of 55 on General
  • Demonstrated weight lift of 40 pounds


  • Candidates without prior military experience are required to attend 8 ½ weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX followed by Technical Training
  • Technical Training - 53 days at JB San Antonio-Ft Sam Houston, TX
  • College credit earned: Ophthalmic Technician – 17 credits
