Tactical Air Control Party Specialist

Overview: United States military operations employ extensive coordination between the various branches to ensure optimal use of resources.  Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) personnel offer a prime example. These Air Force Reserve members are assigned to Army or Marine units and tasked with directing air and artillery strikes from forward ground locations.

Position:  Enlisted


Specific Tasks:

  • Deploy to battlefield forward areas and support other branch units 
  • Provide Air Force expertise essential to joint combat operations 
  • Coordinate air and field artillery fire support 
  • Manage and operate GPS, voice and digital combat communications systems


  • Successful completion of TACP physical ability and stamina test (PAST)
  • Minimum score of 30 on TACP selection model completed in TAPAS
  • Normal color vision and depth perception
  • Compliance with medical standards for Ground Based Controller Duty
  • ASVAB score of 49 on General
  • Demonstrated weight lift of 70 pounds
  • Eligibility for Secret security clearance
  • Eligibility to deploy and mobilize worldwide
  • Qualification to bear firearms
  • Qualification to operate government motor vehicles


  • Candidates without prior military experience are required to attend 8 ½ weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX followed by Technical Training 
  • Technical Training - Fairchild AFB, WA, Hurlburt Field, FL, JB San Antonio-Lackland, TX and Ft Benning, GA; length of courses varies 
  • College credits earned: Information Systems Technology- credits vary
